Practicing Self-Love Vividly

Self-love isn't just a hashtag. In a recent conversation with my girlfriend about combating loneliness, I realized that “meeting our own needs” is key to practicing self-love vividly.

Even in the most mundane daily routine, I started to answer to my own needs:

♡ 1. Being aware of my physical signs:
I noticed myself sweating, my heart racing, a hint of nervousness, and moments of distraction when boarding the MTR in Hong Kong.

♡ 2. Understanding the origin:
I need personal space so much. But the cramped spaces and constant hustle of people in the MTR, where personal boundaries seem nonexistent, triggered my deep discomfort.

♡ 3. Answering to my needs:
Opting for buses over the MTR whenever possible, I provide myself with the little but much-needed personal space and tranquility that bus seats offer.

And more complexly in the realm of human relationships, my need for care from others often leaves me feeling increasingly exposed and alone.

♡ 1. Being aware of my physical signs:
Tears flow uncontrollably when I seek care externally, intensifying when my expectations go unmet. I weep like a child.

♡ 2. Understanding the origin:
Acknowledging my profound need for empathy, support, and even mercy from others; recognizing that such a need isn't always healthy.

♡ 3. Answering to my needs:
During breakdowns, I try to comfort my vulnerable self, such as taking a hot shower, drinking a hot beverage, and saying to myself, "I understand your loneliness and grievances." I also need to understand that while external solace holds value, it's not always readily available.

🤎 Now I’ve come to realise the most enduring comfort stems from within. Luckily It's never too late to start the journey to self-compassion.
